Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes for two conditions which are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. They are characterized by severe inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Prolonged inflammation results in damage to the intestinal tract. Crohn’s disease could affect any parts of the GI tract (from the mouth to the anus). Most commonly, it could affect the parts of the small intestine and then to the large intestine/colon. Ulcerative colitis commonly occurs in the large intestines and the rectum.
